Competence of Grade 8 Learners in the Philippines in Southeast Asia Subject under the Matatag Curriculum in a Philippine Public High School
Abstract
This paper assessed the competence level in the Philippines in Southeast Asia of Grade 8 learners under the MATATAG Curriculum during the school year 2025-2026 in a Philippine public high school. Difference in competence relative to sex, Filipino language literacy, social media use, and section were investigated and 234 randomly sampled learners participated in the study. Data were gathered through a validated and reliability tested researcher-made questionnaire and checklist. Data analysis employed mean, standard deviation, frequency count, percentage distribution, rank, Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis H test. Generally, competence of learners in the subject and four areas scored approaching proficiency. However, demographics achieved proficient and developing level with pilot section and frustration readers respectively. Significant differences were found in sex, Filipino language literacy and section while no difference on social media use. The findings highlight the need for balanced teaching strategies and strengthened support for effective curriculum implementation.
